L’idea di mondo musulmano individua le origini intellettuali di una nozione errata e ne spiega la persistente fascinazione esercitata sia sui musulmani sia sui non musulmani. Concepita come antitesi alla civiltà cristiana occidentale, l’idea di mondo musulmano comparve verso la fine del XIX secolo, allorché gli imperi europei dominavano su gran parte di quelle popolazioni.
